Project: "Thou shall not commit adultery. Church, Sin and Society from Antiquity to the Enlightenment."

The research project deals with sin and the fight against sin in the Western, Christian tradition. The subject encompasses three main problems.

  • First, the concept of sin : what is sin, which origin does it have, why must it be fought, what harm does it do to individuals and to society ?
  • Second, the fight against sin itself: which sins are to be fought, and through what means?
  • Third, the effect of the fight against sin – its results and consequences. The project will here deal with both the results of the fight against sin in the ancient, medieval, and early-modern church, and the long-term consequences for individuals and society in the Western world.
